Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors sit side by side on almost every general surgery tray, and at a glance they look similar. Choosing the right one matters: using delicate scissors on heavy tissue blunts them quickly, while heavy scissors make fine dissection harder than it needs to be.
Mayo scissors: built for tough tissue
Mayo scissors have short, heavy blades relative to their handles. That gives plenty of cutting force for fascia, muscle and other dense tissue, and makes them the usual choice for cutting sutures at the end of a procedure. They come straight or curved:
- Straight Mayo — the classic suture scissor, used for cutting sutures and dressings.
- Curved Mayo — for cutting and dissecting heavier tissue where the curve improves visibility.
Metzenbaum scissors: built for delicate dissection
Metzenbaum scissors have long handles and comparatively short, fine blades, usually with blunt tips. The long reach and fine blades make them ideal for delicate tissue and for spreading tissue planes without cutting — a technique surgeons use constantly. They should never be used to cut sutures, which quickly damages the fine edge.

| Common lengths | 140–230mm | 145–280mm |
Tungsten carbide and “supercut” options
Both patterns are available with tungsten carbide inserts (identified by gold-coloured rings) for a longer-lasting edge, and with supercut blades — one razor-sharp, bevelled blade for an exceptionally clean cut. Supercut scissors are usually marked with black rings. See our article on tungsten carbide instruments for when the extra cost pays off.
Choosing the length
Match the length to the depth of the operating field. Shorter scissors give more control for superficial work; longer patterns are needed in deep abdominal or pelvic surgery. Many teams keep two or three lengths of each on their main sets.
