Instruments for general surgery

General surgery trays carry the instruments used every day in theatre: scissors for cutting and dissection, artery and tissue forceps, needle holders, retractors and clamps. Because these instruments are used so often, consistent quality matters — scissors that stay sharp, ratchets that hold, and jaws that meet evenly.

What a general set usually includes

  • Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors in several lengths
  • Spencer Wells and Kocher artery forceps
  • Toothed and non-toothed dissecting forceps
  • Mayo-Hegar and similar needle holders
  • Langenbeck, Deaver and self-retaining retractors
  • Babcock and Allis tissue forceps

Browse the range below, or send us your current tray list and we will match every pattern and length.

Questions

General Surgery FAQs

What instruments are in a basic general surgery set?

A basic set usually includes dissecting scissors, suture scissors, toothed and non-toothed forceps, artery forceps, a needle holder, retractors, towel clips and a scalpel handle. The exact list depends on the procedures your team carries out.

What is the difference between Mayo and Metzenbaum scissors?

Mayo scissors have short, heavy blades for tough tissue and cutting sutures. Metzenbaum scissors have long handles and finer blades for delicate dissection, and should not be used on sutures.

Do you supply tungsten carbide instruments?

Yes. Many scissors and needle holders are available with tungsten carbide inserts, marked with gold-coloured handles, for a longer-lasting edge and grip.

Can I order by catalogue code?

Yes. Every instrument has a catalogue code (for example SC-GI/035). Send us a list of codes, names or a photo of your tray and we will confirm availability and pricing, usually within one working day.

Can you build a complete set for this specialty?

Yes. We can match an existing tray list or help you put together a new set, supplied with every instrument labelled so it is easy to check and re-order.
